Avery Heights Veterans Wall of Honor – Melvin Christensen

Melvin Christensen: A Life of Service and Dedication
On the Wall of Honor today we highlight Melvin Christensen. Born in Wethersfield, Connecticut, Melvin Christensen’s life has been characterized by a passion for mechanics, public service, and family. As a young man, Melvin discovered his love for automobiles early on, attending trade school in Hartford where he studied auto mechanics.
Melvin and his father owned and operated an Atlantic station between High School and being hired by the state. Because it was in the small town of Cromwell where they were living, he became well known and friends with many townspeople
At 18, Melvin joined the Air National Guard, serving at Bradley Field. His motivation came from his sister’s boyfriend, who spoke positively about military service. During the Korean War era, Melvin served one weekend a month, initially working in the motor pool and advancing to the rank of sergeant.
His professional journey took an unexpected turn when a neighbor introduced him to drafting classes. What began as a casual interest soon became a career-defining opportunity. After taking a drafting test encouraged by his father, Melvin was hired by the state’s Department of Transportation. He worked diligently, eventually becoming head of the drafting department, managing a team of 12 professionals and overseeing projects related to traffic signals, pavement markings, and speed limits.
Throughout his 27-year state career, Melvin balanced his professional responsibilities with his personal commitments. An artistic side complemented his technical skills during his Air National Guard service. His creativity and attention to detail contributed to his success in drafting and management.
He also joined the volunteer fire dept where he was a member until he was injured carrying a stretcher with a patient on it down a flight of stairs.
Melvin’s personal life was deeply enriched by his marriage to his wife, Ethel May, whom he met when he was 16. They married after a five-year courtship, and she initially trained as a nurse before becoming a home aid and later caring for her father-in-law. Sadly, she passed away in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of care and love. Together, they raised three children: Robert (Bobby), who lives in Pennsylvania, Sandra, who also lives in Pennsylvania, and Kim, who resides in Connecticut and has been particularly supportive of Melvin in recent years.
In November, Melvin moved to Avery Heights after selling his home. Despite the transition, he remains positive, enjoying the social environment and support of his children. Now retired, Melvin reflects on a life marked by service, adaptability, and dedication to his family and profession.
With a rich history of military service, a successful career in state government, and a loving family, Melvin Christensen exemplifies a life of purpose and commitment.
